How to Make an Image Spin on Canva

I’m going to show you how to add a rotating animation to a picture in Canva. This is the picture I’m using to demonstrate how to achieve an image spinning animation on this platform.
Before animating, I’m making a small modification to the image. I want to place the subject inside a circle area using a frame.
Make an Image Spin on Canva: Prep the Image
Search for a circle frame in Elements. Add the circular placeholder to your canvas and drag and drop the picture into the frame.

Resize the image inside the frame until it looks right. I’m making it slightly bigger.
If you want to tweak the look first, you can make an image white in Canva before you add the animation.
Make an Image Spin on Canva: Apply Rotation
Select the picture. Click Animate.

Add rotation
In the animation panel, select the Photo section. Scroll down until you find Rotate and click it.

You can set the rotation to clockwise or counterclockwise. Choose the direction you prefer.

Adjust speed and preview
You also have the option to change the speed of the rotation. Make it slower or really fast, then set it where you want.

Preview the result to see the spinning animation. If it looks good, continue fine-tuning.

If you also want to adjust the look of the asset itself, you can change the color of an image in Canva before or after setting the animation.
Make an Image Spin on Canva: Return to Original Position
If you want the picture to arrive back at its original position by the end of the clip, increase the rotation speed or extend the video length. Making it spin faster helps it complete a full rotation within a fixed duration, such as 5 seconds.

Extend duration
Click the thumbnail view on the timeline and enable Duration. Increase the length of the video slightly.

Preview and see if the picture returns to its exact original angle. When you find the point where it aligns, crop the video to that section and preview again.
Make an Image Spin on Canva: Loop as GIF
If you want the picture to spin infinitely, export as a GIF. Click Share, click Download, and in the File type, select GIF.

Reduce the resolution to keep the file size smaller because GIF is not very efficient with large dimensions. Download the file when ready.
Fix premium asset warning
You may see a message that appears when you are using a premium asset in Canva and it is not accompanied by other elements. To bypass that restriction, add a square shape to the canvas and set its transparency to 0 so it is not visible.

Try the download again with GIF selected and a reduced resolution. After the export, preview the GIF to confirm it loops and spins smoothly.

The GIF export can take some time to process. Once it finishes, you should see the image spinning infinitely in the GIF format.
Final Thoughts
That’s how to make an image spin in Canva using the Rotate animation, adjust the speed and duration to land back on the original angle, and export an infinite loop as a GIF. The extra step for premium assets is simple: add a transparent shape and re-export.
If you’re building a design around the effect, you can also add text behind an image to create a layered composition that works well with the spinning motion.
