How to Layer Video Clips in Canva

Layering videos in Canva is not exactly the same as in traditional editors like Filmora or Premiere. Canva’s video editing features are really the bare minimum. It is good for simple videos, but you can still get value out of it. Here is what I do when I have multiple clips on top of one another.

Layer Video Clips in Canva: Start With a Base Clip

I insert some videos and arrange them. I add a video of Santa dancing, place it, and crop the video a little.

If you are not seeing that feature, open the thumbnail view and click Duration so you will see the video thumb. It is very useful when you are dealing with video in Canva.

This is the first layer.

Layer Video Clips in Canva: Add a Snow Overlay and Set Transparency

I add a video of falling snow as the second layer. I set the transparency to around 12 to 15 percent so you kind of see the snow falling. If it is not very visible, 28 percent is better. When you play the video, you will see two videos playing at the same time.

Layer Video Clips in Canva: Put a Graphic Behind an Overlay

I add a simple reindeer graphic. At the moment this reindeer is at the very top of the layer, but I want to put it behind the snowy layer.

I increase the visibility of the snow so you can see it better. Right now this picture is on top of the snow, but I want to put it behind the snow layer.

Follow these steps:

• Open the Position menu.
• Click Layers.
• Play around with the video layers. Right now this is at the very top. At the very bottom is an empty background, then there is the video of Santa dancing, and the video of snow overlay.
• To put the reindeer below the snow, click and drag it to the bottom under the snow layer.

Now this figure is behind the snow layer. When you play the video, it is blocked a little by the snow, which is the effect I want to achieve.

That is the basic of layering videos in Canva. The timeline feature is not showing everything, but the layer position feature is good enough for creating simple videos in Canva.
