How to Create a Comic Strip in Canva

I'm going to show you how you can create a comic strip in Canva. A comic strip is simple and usually shows really good storytelling with a limited number of frames or pictures. I'm not drawing the characters. I'm showing how to create the frames, and then you can insert icons, characters, and speech bubbles to form a comic strip.

Start With a Square Template

Start with a square template. An Instagram post template is perfectly square.

Build the Comic Frames

• Click Elements, then Shapes.
• Set the background to white.
• Add some weight to the border, maybe about 3 px.
• Move it into place and make it bigger.
• Press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard to make sure the frame is perfectly square. It is not going to change its size to something like rectangular.
• When you are done, release the click and release the Shift key.
• Duplicate the frame and place it.
• Select the two of them, group them, and duplicate again.
• Now you have four frames that you can start drawing on.

Add Speech Bubbles and Elements

You can start adding some characters and pictures. I do not have any tool nor do I have skill to draw those characters, but a few elements you can incorporate are the speech bubbles.

• You can find the speech bubble in the Shapes section. There are a few speech bubbles available.
• Change the background color to white.
• Add a border of maybe 2 or 3 pixels.
• Put it appropriately depending on where you are drawing the character.

Customize Colors and Finish Up

• Play around with the color. You can also play around with the gradient.
• Add characters and any other elements you need.

This is a simple way to create at least the template or the backbone of the comic strip. Once the frames and speech bubbles are in place, you can build out your story with characters, pictures, and color.
